7 Dogs: A New Benchmark for Arab Action Cinema
By Dr. Sameera Aziz
In recent years, Arab cinema has steadily expanded its
ambitions, but few productions have demonstrated that evolution as convincingly
as 7 Dogs. More than just another action thriller, the film stands as a
powerful statement of confidence from a region determined to establish itself
on the global cinematic stage. As a major Saudi-backed Saudi-Egyptian
co-production, 7 Dogs represents one of the most ambitious cinematic
ventures undertaken in the Arab world in recent years.
Based on a story by Turki Al-Sheikh and produced through
Saudi-backed entities including Riyadh Season and Sela Studios, the film
highlights the Kingdom’s expanding role as a regional hub for film production
and creative industries. Much of the production was filmed in Riyadh,
showcasing Saudi Arabia not only as a filming destination but also as an
emerging hub for large-scale cinematic projects.
At the heart of the story is Interpol officer Khalid
Al-Azzazi, who finds himself confronting a dangerous criminal organization
threatening regional security through the spread of narcotics. The narrative
gains additional depth through Khalid’s reluctant alliance with Ghali Abu
Dawood, a former adversary whose involvement becomes essential in dismantling
the powerful network. This uneasy partnership creates a compelling dramatic
dynamic that elevates the film beyond conventional action formulas.
What immediately distinguishes 7 Dogs is its
remarkable scale. From meticulously choreographed action sequences and
high-speed pursuits to international settings and visually impressive
production design, the film embraces the standards of a modern global
blockbuster. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah successfully combine
Hollywood-style spectacle with a distinctly Middle Eastern identity, creating a
cinematic experience that feels both international and authentically regional.
The film benefits greatly from its star-studded cast.
Egyptian superstars Ahmed Ezz and Karim Abdel Aziz deliver commanding
performances, while the inclusion of internationally recognized names such as
Monica Bellucci, Giancarlo Esposito, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Saudi comedy
icon Nasser Al-Qasabi broadens the film’s appeal across multiple markets. This
diverse casting strategy serves as a reminder that cinema remains one of the
most effective tools for cultural exchange and international understanding.
Beyond entertainment, 7 Dogs offers a subtle but
meaningful message about cooperation across borders. The collaboration of
talent from the Arab world, Hollywood, and Bollywood reflects a broader reality
of an increasingly interconnected world. In this sense, the film demonstrates how
storytelling can transcend geography, bringing audiences together through
shared experiences, emotions, and aspirations. Such cultural and artistic
exchanges contribute to greater understanding, helping to build bridges between
communities while promoting dialogue, goodwill, and mutual respect.
Technically, the production is equally impressive. Its
large-scale practical effects, record-setting stunt sequences, and commitment
to cinematic craftsmanship reflect a level of investment rarely seen in
regional filmmaking. These achievements are not merely visual attractions; they
signal a determination to raise expectations for what Arab cinema can
accomplish.
As a Saudi filmmaker and the first Saudi national to receive work permits in Bollywood as a director, producer, and writer, I view 7
Dogs as more than a successful film. It represents the growing confidence
of the Saudi and Arab film industries and demonstrates how creative
collaboration can connect cultures, industries, and audiences across borders.
The film’s international approach reflects a new era in which Saudi Arabia is
not only supporting world-class productions but also contributing meaningfully
to the global cinematic landscape. Having been part of Saudi Arabia’s journey
toward greater international engagement in filmmaking, I regard 7 Dogs
as a compelling example of what can be achieved when ambition, investment, and
creative talent converge on a global stage.
Ultimately, 7 Dogs succeeds as both an entertaining
action spectacle and a symbol of a rapidly evolving industry. Ambitious,
polished, and confidently executed, it showcases the growing capabilities of
Saudi-backed filmmaking and marks an important milestone in the continued rise
of Arab cinema as a respected force on the global stage.
